It was just two weeks ago tonight that the field for the 2009 NCAA Tournament had been announced and millions of people began filling out their brackets.
For many, the popular teams that had been chosen to cut down the nets in Detroit ranged from Louisville, Memphis, Pittsburgh, North Carolina, and even Duke. It seemed as if everyone forgot about, or at least did not respect, the Connecticut Huskies. Here we are two weeks later and Jim Cahoun’s team has punched their ticket to the Final Four, and they are of their way with a full head of steam. After being deemed as the “weakest” number one seed in the tournament, UConn has demonstrated the character of a team that is indeed on a mission. In the first round, the Huskies defeated Chattanooga in one of the most lopsided games in NCAA tournament history. They followed up with victories over Texas A&M and Purdue before they flexed their muscles against the Missouri Tigers, who were just one game removed from scoring over 100 points on Memphis in the Sweet 16.
I guess the Huskies are the only ones who can explain their turn-around from the end of the regular season and the Big East Tournament. The injury to Jerome Dyson looked to be extremely costly, and it looked like it was really taking a toll on Connecticut. They were automatically set as the second tier team tp Pittsburgh, who beat up on UConn twice during the regular season. After they were knocked out of the Big East Tournament in a six overtime thriller with Syracuse, UConn’s future was definitely up for debate.
Even with the distractions that came out this past week concerning the NCAA violations, the Huskies kept on winning and are now arguably the hottest team in the Final Four. Even if you aren’t a fan of Connecticut, which I certainly am not, you can’t ignore how big of a statement that this team has made in the past two weeks. Many “experts” had Calhoun and company out in the Elite 8 to a Memphis team who believed they had gotten “snubbed” by the committee with their number two seed. Instead, here they are as a legitimate threat to win a third national title in ten years.
